Fishing Permits
Fishing permits are mandatory for non-BVIslanders. Temporary one-month permits are available in advance from the Ministry of Fisheries, Mon-Fri in Road Town, Tortola. Tel: (+1 284) 494 3429 or 494-3701 for more information.
The use of SCUBA equipment to capture or remove any marine animal or coral is against the law and Spear Fishing is not permitted in the BVI. Fishing within the boundaries of any marine park or from any National Park Mooring is strictly forbidden.
Please note that CIGUATERA is a serious disease which is carried by many reef fish in the Caribbean. It is found in predatory fish such as barracuda, grouper, jacks and snappers plus parrotfish and triggerfish. The ciguatoxin is not destroyed by cooking and there is no effective treatment for ciguatera poisoning. "CATCH AND RELEASE" is very much encouraged to protect people from accidental poisoning and to protect the reef species of the BVI.
